Report of the competition
On the first day of play, the four seeded teams won quite easily, i.e. Great Britain, Belgium A, France and Germany.
The semi-finals were played the second day. In the first semi-final, Great Britain defeated Belgium 5 to 1 but some of the matches gave rise to close battles. In the other semi-final between France and Germany, the battles were even closer and it was 2-2 after the singles. Unfortunately, two German players injured themselves during the doubles and left the victory to France by 4-2.
The singles of the final and of the ranking ties took place the third day while the doubles took place the last day. In the final, France was stronger than Great Britain in the singles, leading 3-1. However both doubles went to a third set tie-break, with one victory for each team. Therefore, the final result is 4-2 for France. The victorious French team was comprised of Patrice Beust (captain), François Pierson, Dominique Legat, Michel Leclercq and Michel Bouzigue.
In the ranking tie between Germany and the first team of Belgium, the Germans won quite easily the four singles while the Belgians saved the face by winning both doubles.
In the ranking ties between the losers of the first day, the second team of Belgium won its two ties against South Africa and Ireland with a score of 3-3, but winning by the number of sets against South Africa and one more game only against Ireland.
